Characters and bytes are different
Character counts describe visible text; byte counts describe data size. A character such as é can take more than one UTF-8 byte. A family emoji can contain multiple code points but still count as one visible character.
The main character count excludes line breaks but includes spaces and tabs. Use the whitespace-free count when required, and check the target platform’s own rules before publishing.
